York Festival of Ideas 2015

The York Festival of Ideas, now in it’s fifth year, is on from the 9th -21st June 2015, with one or two extra events happening in the run-up.

There are more than 150 events being put on this year, mainly focused around the theme of ‘Secrets and Discoveries’, but  I want to tell you briefly about two events that myself and some of my colleagues from the Department of Archaeology will be running.

The Secret Science of Scurvy @ Science out of the Lab

Saturday 30th May, 10am-3pm, St Sampson’s Square.

As part of this two-day community event (it runs on Friday and Saturday, with different activities happening each day), I’ll be presenting ‘The Secret Science of Scurvy’, a hands-on event for children aged 5-11 – and their parents! – to discover how scurvy (the disease caused by not eating enough vitamin C) affects the human body and how it can be cured through diet.

You Are What You Eat @ Festival Fringe Family Fun Afternoon

Saturday 13th June, 1.30pm-4.30pm, Ron Cooke Hub, University of York

‘You Are What You Eat’ invites children to explore food and diet from an archaeologist’s perspective. There are three separate activities: an archaeological ‘dig’, a food ‘craft market’ and a drawing station. Children are welcome to participate in one, two, or all three of these activities as many times as they want to over the course of the afternoon.
